Microneedling: Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Treatment

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling, sometimes called collagen induction therapy, is one of the most popular skin treatments available today — and for good reason. Using a specialised device fitted with ultra-fine needles, the treatment creates thousands of tiny micro-channels in the surface of the skin. This controlled process encourages your skin's natural repair response, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin.

It sounds more dramatic than it is, we promise! Microneedling is a well-established, minimally invasive treatment that is suitable for a wide range of skin types and concerns.

What Skin Concerns Can It Help With?

Microneedling is a wonderfully versatile treatment. Many of our clients come to us hoping to address:

  • Fine lines and the early signs of ageing
  • Uneven skin texture and enlarged pores
  • Acne scarring and other surface scarring
  • Dull, tired-looking skin
  • Hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone
  • Stretch marks

It is important to note that individual results will vary, and we always recommend a thorough consultation before booking any treatment. Microneedling is not suitable for everyone, and a qualified practitioner will assess whether it is the right option for your skin.

What Does a Microneedling Treatment Actually Feel Like?

Most clients are pleasantly surprised by how comfortable microneedling is. A topical numbing cream is applied to the skin beforehand, which significantly reduces any sensation during the treatment. You may notice a light warmth or tingling, but discomfort is generally minimal.

The treatment itself typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the area being treated. Afterwards, your skin will likely appear red and feel similar to mild sunburn — this is completely normal and usually settles within 24 to 48 hours.

What Should You Expect After Treatment?

The days following your microneedling session are an important part of the process. Here is a general guide to aftercare:

  1. Keep it gentle: Avoid harsh cleansers, exfoliants, and active ingredients (such as retinol or acids) for at least a week.
  2. Stay sun safe: Your skin will be more sensitive to UV exposure, so SPF is absolutely essential.
  3. Stay hydrated: Use a gentle, hydrating moisturiser to support your skin's recovery.
  4. Avoid makeup: Try to go makeup-free for the first 24 hours to allow the skin to breathe and recover.

Your practitioner will provide you with full, personalised aftercare advice following your appointment.

How Many Sessions Will You Need?

This really does depend on your individual skin concerns and goals. Many clients begin to notice an improvement in skin texture and radiance after just one session, though a course of three to six treatments is often recommended for more significant concerns such as scarring. Sessions are usually spaced four to six weeks apart to allow the skin time to recover and rebuild.
